Description
What is it?
Adapted from the MACS, Mini-MACS provides the same structural approach to describing hand function but for children ages 1-4 years old with cerebral palsy. The descriptions following each level are designed to reflect hand function in situations that are uniquely distinct to children in this age group.
Mini-MACS contains five levels as well as guidance for distinguishing between the levels. The levels include:
- I – Handles objects easily and successfully.
- II – Handles most objects, but with somewhat reduced quality and/or speed of achievement.
- III – Handles objects with difficulty.
- IV – Handles a limited selection of easily managed objects simple actions.
- V – Does not handle objects and has severely limited ability to perform even simple actions.
Mini-MACS should also be completed by someone who engages with the child on a daily basis including a parent, childcare providers, or therapist. Children in this age group will not be able to complete the classification tool themselves.
Mini-MACS is provided as a downloadable PDF that includes the complete tool and instructions for use.
