Focus on Family and Youth

Three young women sitting on a couch take a selfie together, smiling and laughing, with one holding a smartphone at arm’s length.

We are committed to empowering children, youth and their families by promoting family-centered care and engagement through co-design and research partnerships. Our unit of interest is family! We try to support parental understanding of child development as well as disability, the importance of engagement in life, and achievement rather than limitations.

This approach prioritizes the voices of families and youth by empowering their involvement in research, and the development of family-centred services. Research studies in this theme, such as the Measure of Processes of Care (MPOC) and BrothErs and Sisters involvement in health care TranSition for youth with Brain-based disabilitieS (BEST SIBS) Study, aim to develop effective tools and strategies to enhance family-centered care and support. CanChild also offers a Family Engagement in Research Course to support families in becoming active partners in research.
