A New Approach to Supporting Children and Families – Building the Future by Focusing on What They “Can Do”

Family(家族)、Fun(楽しさ)、Friends(友だち)、Functioning(できること)、Fitness(心と体の健康)、Future(将来)の6つからなり、世界保健機関(WHO)の国際生活機能分類(ICF)を、家庭や現場で日々の関わりに自然に取り入れられるよう工夫したものです。

12th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society of Pediatric Physical Therapy, Public Open Lecture by CanChild Centre for Childhood-onset Disability Research
From Canada

Children and youth with disabilities, like all children, deserve opportunities to participate, grow, and thrive in their everyday lives. Research from CanChild in Canada has shown that families and professionals can achieve this by focusing on what children can do, rather than on their limitations. Over the past decade, our team and international collaborators have developed approaches that put families at the centre, while emphasizing children’s strengths, hopes, and futures.

One of the most widely shared ideas is the F-words for Child Development: Family, Fun, Friends, Functioning, Fitness, and Future. These six words bring the World Health Organization’s International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) into everyday practice in a simple, memorable, and family-friendly way. Families and service providers around the world have embraced the F-words as a guide for goal setting, communication, and everyday decision-making.

Building on this foundation, CanChild has co-created additional resources with parents and youth. About My Child is a practical tool that helps families and professionals work together to capture children’s strengths and needs. The ENVISAGE program provides parents with opportunities to connect with others who share similar experiences, gain confidence in supporting their child, and discover new ways to focus on strengths and possibilities. Families who take part describe feeling more supported, empowered, and hopeful about their child’s future.

Across all of these initiatives, the focus is on partnership: families and professionals learning from one another, setting meaningful goals together, and creating environments where children can be fully engaged. This lecture will introduce these concepts, highlight research evidence, and share stories from families who have put them into practice. By shifting attention from deficits to possibilities, and by building strong collaborations between families and professionals, we can create supportive communities that value participation, inclusion, and well-being for all children and youth.
