Caring About Caregivers
What factors predict the psychological and physical well-being of primary caregivers of children with cerebral palsy? Through this research, we are investigating how various child and caregiver characteristics impact the health of primary, informal (unpaid) caregivers (usually parents). Moreover, we seek to compare the psychological and physical health of these caregivers with the health of a provincially representative sample of Canadian parents.
Caregivers participating in this study were recruited from the group of families participating in the Ontario Motor Growth Study(1).
The study itself will include data from both the National Longitudinal Study of Children and Youth and the National Population Health Survey (click on 82F0068XIE).
Impact
- First population-based study of the health of informal (unpaid) Canadian caregivers of children with disabilities.
- Findings will likely be broadly applicable to families of children with other developmental disabilities.
- May reveal protective factors, which may help inform the design of effective preventive measures.
- Will inform decision-makers and service providers about what factors most impact the well-being of caregivers.
